Arctic (and Northern Region) - Northwest Territories and Yukon (Health, Education, Research, etc.) - General - Prime Minister's Signature

This container includes correspondence in English and French regarding Arctic (and Northern Region) - Northwest Territories and Yukon (Health, Education, Research, etc.) - General - Prime Ministers Signature. A letter dated March 15, 1951 from Robert Winters to PM Louis St. Laurent refers to a letter to Bishop Lacroix regarding the teachers to be employed at the school at Chesterfield Inlet where the PM accidentally noted that all the children were all Catholic when in actuality 4 white children and 20 native children (out of 100) were Protestant. A letter from the PM states that if there is a Protestant minority, then nuns should be invited to accept the teaching responsibility if not lay teachers are available. A memorandum discusses whether public or Church funds were used to construct the school and whether the school would be run by the Church or the state with a note that the clergy would stay there for 20 years whereas lay teachers only a few years. A letter from Mr Winters discusses the difference between territorial schools vs religious schools and how in a territorial school the children can receive up to one-half hour of religious study and the parents can excuse their children if they wish but that further religious education can be provided an the church-run hostel. The container also includes a letter from Vicar Marc Lacroix to the PM stating that he does not agree that clergy would be housing and caring for the children and then they be taught by laymen. A letter to General Young from the Bishop states that he advised the Deputy Commissioner that he would ask the Grey Nuns of MTL, as they were already at the Chesterfield Hospital, and that they had worked out the plans for the residence (details included in letter) and also states that a grant of 30$ a month per child was a trial. A letter from Marc Lacroix to Bishop Lacroix discusses his satisfaction with the rate of construction and recommends that contact between parents and children should be maintained and that the school year should be adjusted so they can be with their parents over winter to prepare them for later in life. It discusses student numbers, what they sought in teachers, the money allotted to the school, as well as transportation. Another document refers to file E-10-1-H (container 46a-c011184) stating that Mrs. George Black requested that the furnishings of the former Commissioners house be available to the Sisters of St. Ann.
