Notice biographique

Round Lake Indian Residential School (IRS) was situated at the East end of Round Lake, on the Northside of the Qu’Appelle River, in the Qu’Appelle Valley, 70 miles East of Fort Qu’Appelle, in the Crooked Lake Agency, in Treaty Number 4 territory, close to Cross Lake reserves in Qu’Appelle Valley including Kahkewistahaw, Sakimay, and Cowessess, and north of Broadview. It operated from 1887 – 1950 (63 years) and officially closed on March 31, 1910.

Other names identifying the school include Round Lake Indian Residential School, Round Lake Indian Boarding School, and Round Lake Indian Industrial Institution (no dates identified).

The Government of Canada was responsible for its funding which was managed and operated by the Presbyterian Church in Canada through the Foreign Mission Committee, Western Division (1887 - 1912); Board of Home Missions, Western Division (1913 - 1926) and under United Church of Canada management through Board of Home Missions and Social Services (1926 - 1950)

In 1911, an agreement between the federal government and the Foreign Mission Committee of the Presbyterian Church in Canada for the operation and management of the IRS was signed.

Although the United Church took over the school administration in 1926, no agreement can be found for its operation and management.

Students from the following reserves attended the school: Kahkewistahaw, White Bear, Carry the Kettle, Sakimay, Ochapowace, and Cowessess.

No information is available regarding which grades were taught.

Student enrolment statistics are very inconsistent as only eight years’ statistics (of 63 years operation) are available.
