Notice biographique

Gordon’s Indian Residential School (IRS) was located within Treaty 4, on the Gordon Reserve west side, six miles south of the Town of Punnichy and eighty miles north of Regina. It operated from 1888 - 1996 (108 years) under the Anglican Church administration.

Other names identifying the residential school include Gordon School (1886), Gordon Boarding School (1889), Gordon’s Indian School (1893), Gordon’s Indian Residential School (1926), and Gordon’s Student Residence (1969).

The Government of Canada was responsible for its funding, which was managed and operated by the Anglican Church of Canada, under the auspices of the Bishop of Qu’Appelle, 1888 - 1946. The school was managed by the Indian & Eskimo Welfare Commission and later, by the Indian School Commission, of the Anglican Church of Canada from 1946 - 1969. The federal government assumed administrative control from April 1, 1969, until its closure in 1996. In 1911, an Operational Agreement between the Bishop of the Diocese of Qu’Appelle and the Government of Canada for the operation and management of the school was signed. In 1962, an Operational Agreement between the Missionary Society of the Anglican Church of Canada and the Government of Canada for the operation and management of the school.
