Mount Elgin Indian Residential School (IRS) was located on the Caradoc Reserve, on the north bank of the Thames River, about one mile from Muncey northwest of St. Thomas and 20 miles from London. The IRS was in operation from 1867 - 1946 (79 years). The IRS officially closed on June 30, 1946.

The Government of Canada was responsible for funding the school, which was managed and operated by the (Wesleyan) Methodist Church Missionary Department or Society, then by the United Church Board of Home Missions (no dates identified). The following dates are of written agreements made by the federal government (no further details are provided); 1867 Operational funding for Mount Elgin and 1869 financial responsibilities towards Mount Elgin Industrial Institution.
