Biographical history

Shingwauk Indian Residential School (IRS) was initially located at Garden River but burned down six days after opening in 1873. Annual reports after 1907 stipulate that the IRS was situated on the bank of the St. Mary’s River within the town limits of Sault Ste. Marie. A third IRS building was officially opened on October 3, 1935, behind the old Shingwauk Home. The school lasted for 97 years before formally closing on June 30, 1970.

Other names identifying the school include Shingwauk Home, Shingwauk Hall, Shingwauk Hostel, Shingwauk House, Shingwauk School, Shingwauk Anglican Indian Residential School, Shingwauk Indian Residential School, Shingwauk Industrial Residential School, Shingwauk Hall Residential School, Shingwauk Student Residence, and Shingwauk Hall Student Residence (no dates specified).

The Government of Canada was responsible for funding the school, which was managed and operated by the Missionary Society of the Church of England from opening to 1969. The federal government managed and operated the IRS in its final year from April 1, 1969 - June 30, 1970. In 1911, the federal government signed an agreement with Reverend George Thomeloe, Bishop of the Diocese of Algoma, for the operation of the IRS to maintain and educate at the Boarding School at Sault Set. Marie known as the Shingwauk and Wawanosh Homes. In 1935, the federal government signed an agreement with the Incorporated Synod of Algoma, in which it is stated the Shingwauk “shall be under the management and control of the Synod.” In 1956 and 1959, the federal government signed agreements with the Board of Education of Sault Ste. Marie at Anna McCrea Public School. In 1962, the federal government signed an agreement with the Anglican Church regarding the operation of Shingwauk.
