Notice biographique
The Sandy Bay IRS was located within the Sandy Bay reserve, on the west shore of Lake Manitoba in the Manitowapah agency 5 miles east of the village of Amaranth and 75 miles northwest of Winnipeg. The IRS operated from 1905 - 1970 (65 years). The IRS officially closed on June 30, 1970. Other names identifying the IRS include Sandy Bay (Indian) Boarding School (1905) and Sandy Bay (Indian) Residential School (1926). The Government of Canada was responsible for funding the school, which was managed and operated by the Roman Catholic Church by the Oblate Fathers of St. Boniface.
The Sandy Bay IRS closed in 1970, at which time the Church was still responsible for the management of the residence and school. There are no records of school management being turned over to the government between 1962, the date of the INDIANESCOM (Oblate Indian and Eskimo Council) agreement with the Oblates, and 1970, the date of the residence’s closure. In 1911, an agreement between His Majesty the King and L.P. Langevin, Archbishop of the archdiocese of St. Boniface, was made to support, maintain, and educate 60 pupils at the Sandy Bay Boarding School, on the Sandy Bay Reserve. In 1962, an operational agreement stipulated that the Oblate INDIANESCOM (Indian and Eskimo Welfare Commission) manages the school and residence. In 1970, the chaplaincy contract for the provision of chaplaincy services, including religious guidance, by the Order of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate to the Sandy Bay IRS, was created.
Enrolment statistics are not available for the IRS, and no information is available regarding grades taught at the IRS.
