Biographical history

McIntosh Indian Residential School (IRS) was located 3 miles north of the Station of McIntosh on the C.N. railway line 168 miles east of Winnipeg from 1925 - 1969 (44 years). The IRS officially closed on June 30, 1969.

Other names identifying the residential school include McIntosh Indian Residential School (aka McIntosh Indian Boarding School); McIntosh R.C. Residential School; Indian Training School, McIntosh; Indian Industrial School, vicinity of McIntosh; Indian Mission School, McIntosh (no dates identified).

The Government of Canada was responsible for funding the school, which was managed and operated by the Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate from 1925 - 1969. In September 1962, an agreement was signed between the federal government and Indianescom (Oblate Indian and Eskimo Council) for the management and operation of the IRS.
