Pelican Lake (Sioux Lookout) Indian Residential School (IRS) was located on the shore of Pelican Lake a few miles from Sioux Lookout between 1927 - 1978 (51 years). The IRS officially closed in June 1978.
Other names identifying the residential school include Sioux Lookout Indian Residential School, Sioux Lookout Anglican Indian Residential School, Anglican Indian Residential School, Pelican Lake Indian Residential School, and Pelican Lake Student Residence (no dates identified).
The Government of Canada was responsible for funding the school, which was managed and operated by the Missionary Society of the Church of England in Canada from 1927 to April 1, 1969. The government assumed full responsibility for operating the IRS until it closed in 1978. In 1962, the federal government signed an agreement with the Anglican Church for operation and management. In 1969, the government signed agreements with various Anglican Church agencies to provide advisory and liaison services in connection with Indian student residences and again in 1971. In 1969, a contract was signed [with the Anglican Church] to provide chaplaincy services to Pelican Lake IRS and again in 1973.
