Biographical history

Norway House (U.C.) Indian Residential School (IRS) was located at Rossville Village, about 25 miles down the Nelson River from Lake Winnipeg, in Keewatin territory. The IRS was in operation from 1899 - 1967 except for the 8-years from 1946 - 1954 (60 years). Other names identifying the residential school include Norway House Boarding School (1899 - 1925) and Norway House Indian Residential School (1925 - 1967). The IRS was destroyed by fire on May 29, 1946, and remained un-operational until it was rebuilt and opened in September 1954. The Government of Canada was responsible for funding the school, which was managed and operated by the Methodist Missionary Society of Canada from 1899 - 1925 and the United Church of Canada, Board of Home Missions from 1925 - 1967. No information regarding what grades were taught nor any enrolment statistics are available for the IRS.
