Seven Islands Indian Residential School (IRS) was located in the community of Maliotenam east of Sept-Iles on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. The IRS operated from 1952 - 1971 (19 years) under the Roman Catholic administration.

Other names identifying the residential school were Seven Islands (Sept-Îles) Indian Residential School, Seven Islands (Sept-Îles) Student Residence, Notre-Dame Residence, Maliotenam Indian Residential School, and Maliotenam Indian Student Residence (no dates identified).

The Government of Canada was responsible for funding the school and was managed and operated on behalf of the government by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate with Les Soeurs de Notre Dames Auxiliatrice from 1951 - 1962. INDIANESCOM (Indian Eskimo Commission) managed the IRS from 1962 - 1969. Effective April 1, 1969, the federal government administered the student residence. The IRS closed in July 1991.

Students ‘recruited’ from other reserves, bands, or regions include; Bersimis, Fort Chimo, La Romaine, Mingan, Natashquan, Schefferville, Seven Islands (Old and New Reserve), St-Augustine and Les Escoumins.

Student enrolment statistics at the IRS are inconsistent from 1952-1953 to 1959-1960 then available quarterly from 1960-1961 to 1970-1971 with an average low of 76 students in 1970-1971 and an average high of 179 students in 1960/61.
